Ryph’s Stance

The crown was stuffed into Eagy’s pack with Klubb’s, Mal’s, and the first piece of the vorpal blade. And yet, there wasn’t a stronger magical residue hanging around Eagy as one might think with such heavily magical items on him. Either Eagy himself overshadowed the magic or the pack did… or maybe it was Wally.

Another night later, they had returned to Childhood and left Nine with her children, Lily, Lily’s children, and the toves to continue constructing Childhood. The sons were all obviously relieved when Nine returned to them, nodding that she had done what she set out to do. It had nothing to do with the crown itself. It was about Mal believing their story.

That didn’t change their punishment, as far as Mal was concerned. Whatever reason they used to convince themselves that they hadn’t had a choice but to murder innocent people, they still had. Not one of them argued it. Chesh was a bit surprised, impressed even, that they didn’t complain at all about the manual labor. Not even Lily.

They stopped at the inn long enough to gather their belongings and pack the tove’s packs. When they left the inn, Rehm insisted they get a ‘sweet’ before they left. He wanted another trip to the sweet shop. Lede rolled his eyes but didn’t bother hiding his grin when he took Rehm from Wyat and they headed into the sweet shop.

As he had when they’d arrived, he brought everyone out treats, including the soldiers and the toves. He gave Ryph three orange tarts, making Ryph almost bounce in his boots. Chesh watched him through hooded eyes. He’d been a bit better since playing games and the two of them pairing together. Ryph enjoyed Chesh’s company. It made the end of the game bittersweet for both of them. Ryph, though still on a high from the competition, always gave Chesh a sad smile when they parted ways, making the ache in Chesh’s chest stronger.

He moved his attention back to Lede as he made his way through their family, handing them their sweets. Eagy took Rehm from Lede’s back, holding him with a grin while the boy ate his sweet cake with sticky fingers and smacking his lips. When Lede came back to give Eagy his tart, he placed it right in Eagy’s mouth and their eyes locked in a heated gaze that Chesh felt a dozen feet away. When Lede pulled his hand away, he brought his thumb to his mouth to lick off the last of the glaze. Eagy’s cheeks flushed as he watched Lede walk away.

Perhaps he’d felt Chesh watching because Eagy turned and looked at him. He sighed, giving Chesh a weak smile before turning back to watch their son enjoy his dessert.

Before Chesh could really dig into this new development, the noise of several voices raised up in a single cheer drifted through the air. He grimaced. These damn C.A.W. people were going to get annoying pretty fast.

Mal meandered that way, the group right before her.
