‘Bjarki, Bjarki – come back. Bjarki – will you wake up now?’

The young warrior realised someone was slapping his face. Hard. He opened his eyes. Raising his wet head slightly he saw he was covered with Valtyr’s sheepskin cloak and his own bearskin was flung on top of that. Parts of his body felt as if they were burning. Flames on his fingers and toes.

‘Did you feel her leave?’ said Valtyr, peering deeply into his eyes.

Bjarki just groaned, and tried to sit up. He wiped his face with a corner of the bearskin. He felt dizzy, exhausted – and suddenly nauseated.

He leaned to one side and vomited a thick yellow stream.

‘Do you think we did it?’ said Valtyr. ‘Bjarki, did we get her out?’

‘I don’t know,’ he mumbled. ‘Maybe.’

‘But can you feel your gandr’s presence in you now?’

‘No. I can’t feel her.’

‘That’s good. I think we did it. I think you did it, Bjarki!’
