“You are incredible,” I said, pulling her to me.

“Mmmm,” she murmured, snuggling into my arms. “You too.”

“I can’t spend the night with you, though, I’m sorry,” I said.

She flipped to look at me, hurt in her eyes. “Really? Why?”

Of course she was going to ask that.

“I… I can’t. I have night terrors,” I admitted. “I can’t have anyone in my bed, even when I want. It’s dangerous.”

“Really? I’m sorry. Does it have to do with… what you guys have been through?”

She was starting to catch on. We hadn’t told her much, but she was putting the pieces together and learning the price of doing some of the things we’d done.

“You can’t even try?” she asked sweetly, laying her hand on my chest. “I… I could really use it.”

Tempting… but even if I could spend the night with her, it would royally piss the other guys off. After all, we were punishing her for stealing.

“Nope. Can’t do it. In fact, the guys have to lock me into my room every night.”

The look of horror on her face didn’t feel good, I’ll admit. The last thing I wanted was pity. I’d made my career choices, and was prepared to live with the consequences.

“Is there anything—”

I shook my head. “No. But thank you for asking, and in fact, I think it’s time to turn in right now.”

I kissed her on the forehead and picked my clothes up from the floor. Feeling like shit, I left her there on her bare mattress without a stitch of clothing on, locked her door from the outside, and went to my own room at the far end of the hall.

At least she wasn’t tied up any more.

I was getting comfortable with a book, when there was a sharp knock on my door.

“You in there, Christian?” Dutch asked.

“Yup,” I called back, turning the page of an old vampire novel. Cheesy as hell, but horror helped me fight off the real terrors in my head sometimes. “Go ahead.”

The key to my bedroom door locked from the outside, leaving me alone with my nightmares where I couldn’t hurt anyone but myself.
