The Candle of Hunger

While your nature is purified through fasting

you’ll follow the footsteps of the purified through the universe.

With the burning of the fast, you will radiate like a candle,

but with the darkness of mouthfuls,

you’ll just be a morsel for the earth.

This Lower Mind Is Like a Donkey

This lower mind is just like a donkey:

it can’t stop thinking of how to get its fodder.

But Jesus’ donkey acquired a soul:

it made a home in intelligence.

In Jesus reason was strong;

his donkey was made lean by a strong rider,

but from the weakness of reason,

this worn-out ass becomes a dragon.

But if you have a guide like Jesus

and he has made you heartsick,

don’t forget that your health, too, is from him.

Do not run away from him.

How do you deal with affliction,

you who have the healing breath of Jesus inside?

For in this world there’s always a snake

guarding the treasure.
