Blaise left The Advocate in a hurry. There was just one person she could turn to, yet as she sat on the crowded Tube, heading for Knightsbridge, she tried desperately hard to come up with an alternative. She hated the thought that, after their wondrous night together, the first thing she’d be doing would be asking Adam for money – that is, if she could contact him. He’d said he’d leave her the phone number of the place where he’d been staying, but as she’d told him she didn’t want it he probably hadn’t bothered. Anyway, by now he’d be on his way to the airport.

Blaise shuddered. She could hardly go to Mr Gifford or Johnny Norton. The Advocate might not carry negative stories about the Royal Family, but paying money – and such a lot of money at that – to kill off a piece was another matter entirely. She’d had absolutely no authority to make her impulsive offer.

As soon as Blaise was inside the flat she started searching for Adam’s phone number. There wasn’t a note next to the bed, in the study or the sitting room. Other than the usual pair of silver candlesticks, there was nothing on the dining room table.

‘Thank God,’ she exclaimed when she walked into the kitchen and saw a piece of paper propped up against the fruit bowl. I will be counting the days, it said, above Adam’s name. In the lower right-hand corner he’d scrawled a phone number next to the words I know you’re not keen on the idea, but if you happen to come home early, try to call anyway. I’d love to hear the sound of your voice one last time.

She flew back to the study and picked up the phone. Maybe there was a chance Adam hadn’t left yet.

Blaise felt faint with relief when she heard him answer. ‘You’re still here!’ she exclaimed. ‘Do you have time to meet me at my place?’

‘I was just going to ring you,’ he said. ‘My flight’s been delayed, something about bad weather over the sub-continent. I’ll get my things together and – ’

Blaise broke in. ‘Adam, this is urgent. I have a problem.’

‘Give me twenty minutes.’
