Village visits
An excellent community-run village tour can be organized through the impressive ANC Women’s League veteran, Betty Madlalisa (R85, 083 339 0454). Apart from visiting homesteads, the outing takes in the Masizame Women’s Project (daily 8am–5pm), housed in a colourful building opposite the Bayview Store, 5km out of Coffee Bay on the Mthatha Road. The project is one of the very few outlets in South Africa where you can buy traditional Xhosa craftwork, including beaded bags and belts, traditional clothing, baskets, mats and blankets. With advance notice, they also offer Xhosa meals (R65) washed down with traditional beer.
