Chapter Twenty-Four

They had been drowning in the sea of desire for more than two months. From time to time, Keou would awaken in a start, lifting his head above the surface, only to find himself surrounded by a vast, endless expanse—no people, no boats, not even a glimpse of land. The future stretched out before him in total darkness. He felt there was no escaping this sea—he could only sink deeper and die in its depths. And she? She seemed completely unaware that beneath the sea of passion was a bottomless abyss, one that would soon drag her down as well. She clung to his arms with blind faith, believing he could save her. Naked, weeping, she pressed against him, kissing him as if he were her salvation.

She was the one who fell in first! I dove in only to save her. She's the guilty one—she’s the one who tempted me!

And yet, even as this thought struck him, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her feverishly. Suddenly, hatred surged in his heart. He leapt up and began striking her wildly with clenched fists.

“If it helps you to hate me, then hit me,” she wept, pressing herself to his chest. “Hit me until the anger is gone. Just don’t leave me. Don’t abandon me.”

“I hate you—God, I really hate you!” he shouted, pounding on her as he kissed her again.

“What do you hate me for?” she sobbed.

“I hate that you’re not a virgin!”

Her face turned ashen as she stared at him in silence. It was as if his words had sentenced her to a punishment worse than death. Her eyes widened in fear. She looked like someone who had just heard the cruelest possible truth.

“Why did you let him take your virgin beauty first?” he growled, straddling her and striking her again in a fit of rage.

“I’m sorry—I truly am!” she wailed. “I’ll do anything to make it up to you. Anything you ask of me, I’ll accept. I’ve never refused you anything—never! Except for this one thing, this one thing I can’t undo. Please forgive me. Please forgive me just for this!”

Tears streamed down Telly’s face as she broke into sobs.

If only you had been a virgin, even if you had rejected me, I still would have loved you.

As he looked at her now—wan and weary—his desire to dominate her only deepened.

She had grown noticeably thinner than before, yet his impulses remained just as intense. In fact, they had grown even more frequent and aggressive over the past two months. His ways of possessing her had turned harsher—so harsh that they filled her with a sense of humiliating cruelty. Because of him, she hadn’t had a single restful night in the past month. She had come to associate giving in to his every demand with pain rather than pleasure. But still, she submitted. She endured. And in that endurance, she sought some faint glimmer of gratification.

One night, Keou woke her from deep sleep.

“You’re still awake?” she asked groggily.

“I just can’t fall asleep,” he replied.
