“After my last tour, I really got into Pilates, and that’s probably been a good thing to keep up on tour, since all you need is a DVD and maybe a yoga mat if you feel fancy.”
—NINA ELISABET PERSSON, SINGER, THE CARDIGANS
•HOW ACTIVE IS MY LIFE IN GENERAL? AND HOW CAN I BALANCE WHAT I DO IN MY JOB OR DAILY LIFE WITH A FITNESS REGIMEN THAT ROUNDS THINGS OUT? You don’t have to be a rock star to log loads of miles during the course of a normal day. In fact, your normal routine may already include a lot of movement. For example, landscapers, mail carriers, and real estate agents typically move all day long. Or perhaps you have an office job, but you bike or walk to work. Consider your natural activity level when customizing a new workout.
After you’ve taken into consideration how you live each day, use exercise to balance your routine. For instance, studies show that as many as 80 percent of roles in today’s job market are sedentary or include only light activity. If you’re in that camp, you’ll likely enjoy the release of more aerobic or intense work-outs. People with stressful jobs benefit from yoga, which gives them a mental release. Rockers like Dave Ellefson, Ori Kaplan, Jordan McLean, and Bridget Barkan make yoga a regular part of their routine because their shows often involve a great deal of cardio.
Those on the opposite end of the spectrum—contractors, landscapers, or others with more physical careers—would benefit from less intense activities like yoga, swimming, or stretching. If you feel lonely or isolated during the day, as freelancers, telecommuters, or new moms often do, try an activity that engages you socially, like dance. Perhaps your daily routine isn’t that challenging or stimulating. If so, competitive sports or workouts that involve choreography stimulate the brain.
Finally, if you’re already working out, consider adding exercises that balance your dominant nature. For example, flexible people tend to love yoga but could enhance their body by incorporating more strength training. Runners and weight lifters tend to be stiff and usually don’t like stretching, but stretching would benefit their body by balancing it more.
Some of the best exercises for those living a RxStar lifestyle tend to be those that can be done anywhere and incorporate a mind, spirit component. I’ve listed a few here that are favorites of my clients and indicated why they may fit into your lifestyle, too. Remember, health is an adventure. Sometimes it takes experimenting before you find your thing.
