CHAPTER NINE

Revenge, Rescue, and Pyramid Power

With the exception of our little adventure on Cay Sal Island, the remainder of 1974 was relatively uneventful. Even the rest of the world seemed to ebb for a while. There were, of course, a few events that caught our attention. Nineteen-year-old Patty Hearst, heir to the William Hearst fortune, was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army. I could only surmise that after forming their organization they couldn’t find any Symbionese to liberate, so they took up kidnapping and bank robbing. I always thought it was a shame they never ran into our Costa Rican buddy, Sundance. I’m certain he would have added an interesting dimension.

That same year, President Nixon resigned after White House tapes proved he had obstructed justice in the Watergate investigation. Shortly after assuming the presidency, Gerald Ford, confusing his position with that of the Pope, granted a pardon for Nixon, then declared an amnesty for Vietnam deserters and draft evaders. During that summer, the marijuana business in South Florida took a quantum leap. More folks than ever decided to take their fishing boats south for a quick visit with the mango man. Some were getting rich—some were getting time. Our attorney friend Justin Mames made the Miami Herald on a couple of occasions—once for a big pot case he was defending, and once for being arrested as a co-conspirator and an accessory to the importation of illicit substances. He won the noted trial and beat the charges against him without working up a sweat. He was becoming a big name in a lot of circles.

Beyond those items, there was only one other event that caught our attention. It wasn’t as momentous as some of the news that year, but Will and I found it intriguing.

While excavating what was thought to be an ancient Incan mining shaft in Peru, South America, archeologists broke into a narrow underground chamber and discovered a small, solid gold pyramid. It had six-inch sides, and most remarkably, the top third was comprised of a perfectly cut, flawless emerald—the third largest ever found. The pyramid was mounted atop a two-foot-square base of solid marble (of a geological strata not found in South America), and was estimated to be over ten thousand years old, but it was discovered within a culture thought to be no older than two thousand years. Needless to say, the find initiated reverberations in archeological communities throughout the world, and most everyone found the story alluring. But for anyone who had ever found a crafted piece of precious metal shaped by the ancient hands of another time, the tale was purely fascinating. Will and I, of course, fell into that category.

During much of that year we continued to assist our buddy, Nick, with the overflow of shapely cruise mates, who somehow never quite made it to the big cruise. Nonetheless, a good time was had by all. The little calico cat, whom we named Triller, settled in and began to provide one and all with lessons on the feline species.
