Chapter Fourteen

~Diego~

The information she gave him wasn’t exactly what he hoped for, but it made him think. The story Bailey gave him reminded him of how Hector became his uncle in the first place. “Do you think it will ever come to a head between Hector and Carl?”

“If it does, I feel sorry for Hector and anyone associated with him. Roo and their daughter are everything to him. I’ve known him for a long time, and he never thought he would find love and have a family. Not only did he find it, but Roo also fought for him. She’s badass in all our books. How many people do you know could walk into a cartel boss’s office to demand that he release her man and his club without getting shot or worse. Not only did she come out with Hector’s agreement, but he also gave her a financial gift because she provided him with information that kept him for being locked up for the rest of his life.”

“So, this has nothing to do with the details of the Cartel’s business?”

“No. What information we had was only a small piece of the puzzle, and it would have all changed by now. The club has no knowledge of the Cartel’s business anymore.”

Diego realized they had spent a lot of time talking about his uncle. He needed to change the subject. “So, what do you do for a living, Bailey?”

“I’m a lawyer.”

Diego’s eyebrows rose. “Get out.”

She smiled. “I’m an attorney. I specialize in family law.”

“Not criminal law? I would have figured that for you, because you’re so tough. Why Family law?”

~Cougar~

Bailey debated whether to tell him the truth. “I chose family law because I wanted to be an advocate for children. I wanted to ensure that kids have someone interested in what’s best for them.”

“That’s admirable.”

“Thank you.” She took a deep breath. “My sisters and I didn’t have anyone like that looking out for us.”

Diego stopped eating and looked at her. “You had a rough childhood?”

“You could say that. My mother wasn’t exactly maternal in nature. I think my grandmother looked out for us until she died. Then I was old enough to look after us all.” Bailey couldn’t seem to keep her mouth shut once she started talking. She told him almost everything about her childhood. “There was constantly someone coming and going in and out of our house, men, women, strangers, friends. I saw way more than I should have. I had to fend off a few of my mother’s friends once I blossomed.”

“You were never –” Diego started but stopped.

Bailey knew what he was asking, “Oh, hell no! They learned very quickly that I wasn’t the one for that shit. One of the creeps she partied with got a little handsy one night, but I showed him that I could defend myself. When my mother found out, she stopped bringing people to the house. That meant she was gone for days at a time. I made sure that my sisters ate and went to school.
