Dear Harry:

I don’t know why, but I have been thinking today about when you left Hamilton for Camp Shelby. You got such an early start. It seems like such a long time ago now; so much has happened since you left. And if anyone had told me that morning when I hugged you goodbye that it might be our final kiss, I would surely have died. It is a moment I shall cherish in my heart forever.

I called Stephen Brandon after lunch and asked him if he would handle our child’s adoption. Dr. Ernst told me last week, when I went in for a checkup, that everything was fine. Our baby has grown so much, and I am quite huge now. I fear you would hardly recognize me, for I have gained so much weight. Dr. Ernst is convinced I will carry this child to full term next month, but Geneva, who is an experienced midwife, called him an “old quack.” She claims to know more about birthing babies than all the doctors in Hamilton! She thinks I will give birth two weeks earlier than Dr. Ernst predicts, and she also thinks it will be a little boy! How happy this made me to hear her say that, though I am none too sure how Geneva came to this conclusion. Wilma swears her momma “ain’t never wrong ’bout babies.” Then she added, “She ain’t much on picking men, but she knows ’bout babies. So if Momma tells you it’s a boy, you might as well go buy him some pants.”

Geneva claims she can predict the sex of a child merely from feeling how low the baby sits in the womb! Have you ever heard of such? Sometimes Negroes say the strangest things, and they’re so superstitious. But I don’t know what I would do without Wilma and her momma—they have both been so good to me. (And I pray Geneva’s sex prediction is right!)

But it occurred to me that it really doesn’t matter if our child is a boy or a little girl. I only ask God that our child be healthy and a true blessing to some young couple who can’t have children of their own.

Stephen Brandon said he hunts with another lawyer from Jackson who knows a couple who’ve been looking for a child to adopt. God has answered my prayer! All my love—

Emily
