CHAPTER SEVEN

Sam’s whole body twitched with the shock of seeing Abby again.

The last time Sam and Abby had been in the same room, she’d been standing right next to Gideon Arnold, her father. Smiling up at him, eager for his approval. Which he’d given her, of course, since she’d handed him Thomas Jefferson’s quill pen.

Abby had helped Sam, Marty, and Theo track down that pen in the middle of Glacier National Park. Together, the four of them had rafted down a river, trekked through caves and tunnels, and fought off a mountain lion.

Sam had liked her. He’d trusted her. He’d believed without question that she was on their side—and it had turned out that she was nothing more than a brilliant actress. Loyal to her father and no one else.

“Sam, I wish you’d listen to me,” Abby said a few seconds later, leaving the doorway and coming closer to the small group near the open display case.

“I haven’t run out of names to call you yet!” Sam snarled.

He’d already used up “traitor,” “slimeball,” and “scum.”

“Sam,” Marty said quietly from behind his back, but Sam didn’t answer her.

“I can’t believe you’re standing there,” he said, glaring at Abby. “After what you did to me. To all of us. Pretending to be our friend! Pretending you cared about the Founders and what they stand for!”

“Don’t bother, Sam,” Theo said with disgust in his voice. His hand closed around Sam’s arm, tugging him gently backward, and Sam realized Theo was trying to maneuver them toward the door at the opposite end of the room, farthest away from Abby.

Sam knew Theo was right—they had to get out of here before Abby summoned reinforcements. But he wasn’t quite ready yet. He pulled his arm from Theo’s grasp and took a few steps away from his friends so he met Abby face-to-face.

She’d betrayed all three of them, sure, but Sam felt somehow as if he had a special reason to hate her. Back in Montana, as they hiked through the forest together, she’d tried to make him believe that she was his best friend, that he could trust her more than he trusted Marty and Theo. And then she’d handed the three of them right over to her dad!

“It wasn’t all pretending,” Abby said.

She still looked ordinary. You couldn’t tell by looking at her that she was a lying traitor with a killer for a father. Her face, with a scattering of freckles across the nose, looked like any other kid’s in Sam’s grade at school. She seemed a little out of place in her black dress and low heels, like a girl who’d be more comfortable on the soccer field than at a party like this. She looked … nice.

Even her looks lied, Sam thought.

“Some of the things I told you were true,” Abby said, meeting Sam’s gaze.

Sam scowled. “I bet you’ve never said anything true in your life.”

“This is. Sam, you could still join us.”

Sam felt as if something heavy had just dropped on his head.
