Swanson

Swanson traced out potential routes of escape as he scoured over the physical map of Derby someone had laid out on his desk. He focused on the Darley Abbey area, where they had put a circle around Barb’s house, and tasked himself with checking out where possible CCTV cameras might help him find out where she went. He was so engrossed that a knock at the door made him jump, which caused his pencil to fly across the map and mark out a random line. He cursed under his breath before calling them to come in. The door pushed open gently, and Lisa Trent appeared with a tentative smile.

“Oh, you got my map.”

“You left this? I thought…” he trailed off as he realised his paranoia was getting the better of him. Anon was winning.

“Thought what?” Trent pushed. She had a look of concern that immediately made him want her to leave.

“Nothing. I just thought someone else had left it. How can I help?”

“Are you free for a chat? I just got back from speaking with Ben Jackson.”

“Sure. Grab a seat.” Swanson nodded to the chair that had appeared from nowhere a few months ago.

He was pretty sure Hart had snuck it into his office against his will. Though she vehemently denied it.

Trent re-tightened her dark ponytail as she walked. It crossed his mind how annoying it must be having that much hair. He couldn’t imagine anything less practical. She sat on Hart’s chair and cleared her throat nervously.

“I wish I had something pivotal to tell you, but he didn’t give me much, Swanson. I’m sorry. He was a very nice guy and worked for Leicester Police. He retired a couple of years ago now, though.”

Swanson lowered his gaze and pursed his lips. He had expected little to come of it, but a surprise would have been nice all the same.

“What did he say about Marsh’s foster case?”

“He said he doesn’t really remember it.”

“Did he know the social worker? What of Billy Bailey?”

“No. He doesn’t know of Bailey or Livingstone by name.”

“Hm. Thanks for doing the interview, Trent. I appreciate it.”

“No worries. Anything else I can do to help?”

“You could check out these CCTV possibilities.” He handed her the map with his markings around Darley Abbey.

“Sure. I’ll take it through now. And, Swanson, I am really sorry about your aunt.”

“She’s not dead yet,” he snapped.

Trent opened her mouth as if to speak more, but swiftly closed it and nodded sadly. She stood and left the office without another word. She closed the door softly behind her and he picked up a pen from his desk and threw it at the door. It bounced off with a pathetic ding that made him feel even more helpless. He couldn’t stand not knowing. It was his responsibility to save Aunt Barb, and he didn’t even know where to start looking.

What if she was dead? Or what if she was still alive somewhere, desperately waiting for him to save her but knowing he’ll never find her?

He couldn’t decide which was worse.
