I was disappointed not to see Daisy and Tom at dinner again. I’d called her on their room phone, but there was no answer, which was odd.

‘I wonder if Daisy’s remembered any details about her attacker?’ I said to David as we ate our starters.

‘I don’t know, but when I just went to the bathroom, she was being escorted out of the building by two policemen. She was in tears.’

‘Oh God, David, and you didn’t think to mention it?’

‘I’ve only been back at the table two minutes, and to be honest, it does seem to be one long drama with that one. First she’s the one to find the body, then she’s the one to be assaulted… a lot of what’s going on around here seems to keep coming back to her,’ he said.

‘When you put it like that, she has got a bit tangled up in everything, hasn’t she? Poor Daisy, she’s really been through it these past few days, but I don’t think she’s involved in any way, do you?’

As I waited for a response, a waitress brought a jug of water to our table. She was young, her uniform tight, and David watched her as she bent over to place the water before us. Her breasts seem to brush his arm; it wasn’t my imagination, he noticed it too because I saw a look pass between them. It was a moment, blink and you might miss it, but she flushed and we both watched her as she left our table.

‘Have you ever had a threesome?’ he asked casually, his eyes still lingering on her as she walked away.

I almost choked on my wine. ‘No, I haven’t.’

‘Are you shocked at me asking?’ he said, his eyes now dancing.

I looked into his face, trying to fathom out whether he was teasing me again. ‘I am shocked, yes, it’s not something I’d ever want to do,’ I said, which was a lie. I had thought about it, and the very idea of watching the man I adored with another woman was my idea of torture.

‘Oh, Sam, you’re so bourgeois,’ he said affectionately.

‘One of my clients has regular threesomes,’ I said, so he’d think I was worldly and not being a bore.

‘Oh, you must invite her over sometime,’ he replied, with a smile. He was teasing me, but the way he said it made me wonder if he meant it on some level. I wanted to ask him if he’d ever had a threesome, but I could guess what his answer would be, and I didn’t want to hear it. I knew what he’d say and it would make me feel inadequate and jealous. I wondered if he used to make Marie feel like that.
