DO YOUR PREPARATION WORK
The GOSPA process for creating a reputation strategy is fairly straightforward, but it is the thinking behind the process that will get you where you want to be. Let’s go through it in more detail.
Why are you concerned about reputation? Is it a sudden concern because you believe yours has been tarnished by events? Perhaps you believe you have no reputation at all? Or maybe you don’t actually know what your reputation is? Why would it benefit you to have a strong reputation?
Going through a logical planning process will turn lists of issues like these into a relevant action plan for your organisation. And most important, it will ensure your company’s core values align with the desired reputation.
The starting point in producing a strategy to manage your reputation is to write down your business goals, reputation goals and core values on a chart like the one below, also stating the person responsible for this area. Are there any obvious inconsistencies? If so, you need to address them in a way that is in line with your stated purpose, values and what you want to be known for. As CEO, you need to own this. If you don’t know this information off the top of your head, how can you expect your teams to achieve it?
Business goals: We want to achieve …
