Rafe

This dinner is worse than the nine rings of hell that Dante warned of. These people are all bitter, angry people trying to show off their wealth to other bitter, angry people. Fake, annoying people. And Meredith and her mother are the absolute worst.

Starla’s father probably shuffled off this mortal coil just to get away from her. She’s pompous, arrogant and so many other words that I can’t say because I’m a gentleman and like it or not, these people are Starla’s only family.

I just wish that wasn’t the case. I’ve never heard so many fake voices saying fake things in all my life.

Next to me, Starla is attempting to cut a piece of cake and slip it into her mouth while surreptitiously looking to make sure that nobody is paying any attention to her.

Fat chance of that. She’s too beautiful, too sweet, too perfect for this crowd.

‘Hey Starla. Who is your new friend?” One of the women eyes me like I’m a steak she’d like to cut into and I groan at seeing that look.

“He’s not my new friend. He’s my boyfriend, Margot.”

She snorts and her mouth tightens. “I find that hard to believe.” I stiffen at Starla’s side, not liking the insult to my woman.

“Why would you find that hard to believe?” I turn to smile at Starla, watching her eyes widen as she shakes her head subtly. “After all, she’s a beautiful woman. The first time I saw her, I knew she was the one.”

“What one?”

“The one,” I say. “The woman I love with every fiber of my being. My soulmate.”

She snorts again and I glare at her. “Well, it probably isn’t love but I admire you for trying to make this look good.”

And the raging anger that’s been steadily building inside me notches one fiery step higher.

But I push it down and smile grimly at her before turning away to smile at a very nervous Starla. “It’s alright, sweetheart. I won’t tell the woman what a bitch she is.”

Star snorts and then smoothes her face out. “Behave yourself,” she hisses under her breath.

Smirking, I slip my hand under the table and run my palm up her thigh. Fuck, that dress is hideous but it’s got one thing going for it. A long slit up her thigh that makes it easy for my palm to slip under it and find the warm, satiny heat of the inside of her thighs and push them slightly apart.

Her face freezes and then turns beet red. Her silver eyes flash like sparkling, smoky diamonds. “Stop that! You can’t do that now!” Her harsh whisper doesn’t even slow me down. My fingers inch higher until my finger plays with the elastic of her panties. Her eye widen and she gulps a swallow, staring at me.

“You wouldn’t,” she hisses under her breath. Something she should know about me right upfront. I’ve been sweet and respectful of her boundaries until now. But I’ve let her know that I’m coming for her and as far as I’m concerned, she’s been warned.
