An Exercise to Learn about Symbols

Ask your students if symbols in general affect their lives today in any way. They will probably say that they do not. Hand out your sample of business cards with symbols (logos) on them. Ask them which cards they are attracted to and which they are not. Point out the symbols used on the cards. Ask the students to tell about a billboard along the road that stays in their memory too. The symbols on those business cards and billboards send out a message. Businesses agonize over what symbol to use to represent the company and to project their intended message. This example shows the importance of symbols even today.

Symbols have messages and vibrations that affect the viewer. Some people have a connection with symbols prior to this class. It is not unusual for students to report that they had already visualized one or more of the Reiki symbols before ever seeing them in the classroom. During a meditation, I actually heard the name of one of the symbols and wondered what that word was that I kept hearing in my mind.

Each symbol has variations of how it appears. There are two primary reasons for these variations. In the beginning, instructors never allowed students to draw the symbols on paper, and if they were drawn during class, the drawings had to be destroyed before leaving the room. People had to rely on their memory alone to replicate them. This sometimes introduced small variations. Also, it is important to remember that writing the symbols automatically alters them due to our individual handwriting styles. We seldom write our own name in exactly the same way every time. It is our intent and our knowledge of the symbols that keep the symbols’ integrity alive.

The symbols must be memorized. As you memorize them, you can begin to feel each symbol and how each one is different in its own way. Feeling them is an important way to get to know them and to develop a personal relationship with them.

As you work with the symbols during a Reiki session, you can use them in various ways. Let the students know that they can repeat the symbol’s name in their mind during the different hand positions. The students can draw them in the auric field just above the client. Another powerful technique is to visualize the symbols going deep inside of the client. Some practitioners have the symbols taped under their massage table. There is no right or wrong way. Deliberately and consciously use the symbols and allow them to work with you for the benefit of the client. Feel the surge of a more powerful energy. It will not be your imagination. Use them consciously and with clear intent. Remember, all symbols can be used for humans, animals, plants, our homes, our earth, and our world.

During the attunement, all five symbols are placed into the student’s energy field. Although our hands send very focused energy, the sacred symbols do not stay in our hands alone.
