The Man in White sat almost fifteen feet across from Ford, slouched in a similar chair, a vacant stare fixed on his captive, unnerving the normally unflappable lawyer.

Seeing the man for the first time without his mask left the attorney feeling somewhat disappointed, for the man before him bore no physical resemblance to evil. His voice, too, was decidedly unintimidating, if not soft.

But he was terrified.

His breathing grew more rapid, as evidenced by the hummingbird-like flutter of the lawyer’s cheeks; his heart rate also quickened as he gazed helplessly upon the countdown clock inching closer to zero by the literal second.

The Man in White double-checked the connections and the transmission, and as he strapped the voice changer around his throat, he said, “I assume you know why you’re here, but if you do not, you soon will.” The strap was affixed, but the device remained turned off. He squatted before the bound man and said, “You may have fucked me, you know…everything was fine until…” He patted his prisoner on the knee, said, “Well, you’ll find out,” and stood.

The clock was now below a minute, and the view counter was climbing to a thousand. The Man in White dragged the soft white ski mask across the table where it lay by the computer. The mask slunk off the table’s edge, and he held it by his right side as he studied the man one last time. The lawyer’s eyes grew wider under the scrutiny—if that were possible—and his already sweaty face grew shinier. He blinked a couple of times, and either sweat or tears fell from the corner of his good eye.

When the clock reached ten seconds, the Man in White activated the voice changer and slid the mask over his face. At zero, a red light appeared on the computer’s screen, and the Man in White, looking into the camera, said in a deep, distorted voice, “Welcome to the Red Room. As you will soon see, this is a special broadcast, which is why we waived the twenty-five thousand dollar viewing fee.”

The Man in White stepped aside, allowing Nigel Ford Jr. to take center stage. “Today, our…guest…is not of the usual female variety.” The figure clad in white reentered the picture from the right side of the screen and walked behind the lawyer. He held up a finger and said, “But before you go logging off, know that there will be a murder. This,” he said, standing behind the bound man and placing his hands on his shoulders, bringing a shudder from the captive, “is Nigel Ford Jr., and he is one of you.” The mysterious figure was acutely aware of how to build tension and anticipation among his fans, so he allowed the last statement to vibrate in the air. After a moment, he removed his hands from the lawyer’s shoulders and, with a slow and even pace, completed the path behind the chair and returned to the camera, standing just off-center, making sure Nigel Ford Jr. remained in view.
