Football Champion Subdivision (FCS)
The Football Championship Subdivision has fourteen conferences and 127 schools. FCS football schools can offer sixty-three full athletic scholarships annually. These sixty-three scholarships can be divided among eighty-five players. FCS schools play a twelve-game schedule, and based on their record, they have an opportunity to play in the playoffs. FCS schools donât participate in bowl games; rather, they have a playoff system.
Additionally:
â¢Ivy League schools are considered Division I-AA (FCS), but do not offer athletic scholarships and do not have a postseason.
â¢Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are considered Division I-AA (FCS), offer full scholarships, and participate in bowl games.
Division II
There are seventeen Division II football conferences and 169 Division II schools. Division II schools offer thirty-six partial athletic scholarships only.
Division III
Division III has twenty-nine conferences and 250 football schools. Division III offers no athletic scholarships (only academic and need-based), and Division III football is the largest of all athletic divisions. Division III football schools have a postseason playoff system, and they donât play in bowl games.
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)
Junior college (JUCO) offers full athletic scholarships annually (which can be divided into partial scholarships). JUCOs in some states offer football, but no athletic scholarships. The number of scholarships varies by institution. JUCO schools participate in bowl games, and there are 136 football schools at this level.
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
The ninety-six NAIA football schools offer twenty-four athletic scholarships annually that can also be divided into partial scholarships per team. NAIA schools participate in the playoff system and are not bowl game eligible.
