Chapter 4

Nate felt like the most stupid person on earth. Why would he do that, lay bare his naked emotions before a man he hardly knew, proclaiming his love and his willingness to wait until the person was ready? Was that what love did to you, reducing you to a pleading mess before the very person you had fallen for? It wouldn’t have been so bad if the man loved him back. Lucian was too good to outright say no. He stalled. The problem was fully on Nate’s shoulders. He didn’t get it and still clung to hope. Lucian had asked for more time and Nate gladly gave it to him, not realizing that it was just Lucian’s way of saying no.

And love…really? Maybe Nate was just horny. After years without a man, besides himself and his hand—in this small town, what could he expect? It was no wonder he’d pounced on the first fresh male face, even if he’d not been sure Lucian was gay. When he’d found out that he really was, Nate had felt like he’d won a lottery.

Yeah, he must be horny. Besides, he had never truly been with anyone before. It was mostly one-night stands for him. Having friends with benefits was the most he’d ever had. Nate huffed. He told Lucian he’d wait for him and then what?

Nate was surprised to find he didn’t have an answer for that. It was terrible. Lucian had just lost his boyfriend. He didn’t deserve Nate’s doubtful self.

He wondered where Lucian was right then. The man had said he wanted to go talk to Helen. It might have ended badly. Nate remembered how upset Lucian was that morning. He’d better go find Lucian right away.

He couldn’t find Lucian anywhere. The first place he checked was Helen’s office but he found only her there, alone, obviously shaken by something, but she kept her mouth shut when Nate asked what was going on. What puzzled him more was when he asked about Lucian’s whereabouts. Helen burst into tears before she spurred into action. She grabbed several tissues, blew her nose, and met Nate’s eyes, smiling as if nothing happened.

“I’m sorry, honey. I don’t know where he is.”

“He told me he wanted to talk to you.”

“We—we did talk but he left some moments ago.”

“Do you know where he went?” Nate wondered if it was even his business but he was determined to make it his.

“No. He didn’t say.” Helen’s voice faltered and Nate frowned.

“You’re lying.”

“No.” Helen stared at him, and squinted. “Why are you suddenly interested in him? What’s going on?”

Nate stammered. “Well…”

“You like my grandson, don’t you?”

“I, uh…”

“I’ve never seen you with a girl. I didn’t know you were gay.” It sounded like a question from the way Helen’s voice rose.

“Why does it matter if you know or not?”

Helen sighed. “Nate, I think of you as my own family. I always welcome you at my house and I’ve known you for five years or more.”

“It doesn’t mean I have to tell you everything, right?”

Helen paused.
