Hyperoodon was left alone on the sand.

He had no followers to lead and command.

“I shall neither budge, nor shall I ever bend,

Each one of those wimps was a fair-weather friend,

“And as he said this all alone to the sea,

He suddenly realized he had company.

A shark he had chased earlier in the day,

Had now returned to make the hunter his prey.

Hyperoodon swam as quickly as he could,

But the hungry shark was as swift and as good

As the stubborn whale he ruthlessly pursued

With a vengeful fury by the chase renewed.

The dark waters thundered with much commotion,

As is the trait of a treacherous ocean,

When two mighty forces determined to kill,

Collide to do battle with patience and skill.

All the sea creatures scurried from the melee,

Except the beaked whales. They could not turn away

And leave one of their youths to perish alone.

It was not their nature to forsake their own.

The waters roared with Hyperoodon’s cries,

Which pierced through the heart of the oldest and wise.

“It is this herd’s duty to answer his call,”

Said Ziphi, the eldest and wisest of all,

And when the bold warrior gave them the cue,

They swished and swam to Hyperoodon’s rescue,

Who had, at that moment, escaped the shark’s threat

By getting entangled in a whaler’s net.
