Stunning scenery was the norm

A trip to Ende was necessary in order to determine when the ferries ran to Timor. The information I received was sketchy, to say the least, as there’s no set timetable. There were two ferry companies (I think – still not sure): Indonesian Ferries (government owned), and ASDP, but details about both were very vague. The guy at the backpacker lodge where I was staying said there would be a ferry in the morning, but the following day I arrived to discover that none was due for a week. However, a ferry crossing to Timor was scheduled from Larantuka a day’s ride away. Arriving at Larantuka Saturday 12 December (16,862 miles/27,136km) I found the ferry office to be like a building site, with staff present only on those days when crossings were scheduled.
