Both Jefferson (left) and Alexander Hamilton (center) were members of President George Washington’s (right) cabinet, but they were not allies.

Jefferson himself might disagree with that label. He might say that just as many of his views, such as his belief in free education and the rights of the common citizens, can be found in today’s Democratic Party.

FATHER OF AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY

In the countryside near Jefferson’s home in Virginia lay an American Indian burial mound. When he was young, he saw a party of Indians visit the mound. (Jefferson may have been as young as eight, but historians aren’t sure exactly how old he was.) The group left the main road nearby and traveled about 12 miles (19 km) through the woods. Then they arrived at the site. Jefferson wrote that they had “expressions which were construed to be those of sorrow.”6

The image of the American Indians grieving their ancestors must have made an impression on young Jefferson. All his life, he had a great interest in learning more about the tribes of Virginia. Later, in 1780, a French diplomat asked the Continental Congress questions about the 13 American states. Jefferson took on the job of answering the questions about Virginia.

One of the questions was about the native people who lived in the area that became Virginia. Jefferson researched them and wrote about their history and language. He also wrote about the land where they had lived. And he wrote about the burial mound.
