Formal Assessment

Formally assessing the ability to communicate thought receptively and expressively is typically the job of SLPs. Educators have other opportunities, however, to use formal assessment to gather information related to sentence comprehension. For example, Table 5.8 outlines types of assessments that are typically used in school settings and associated with response to intervention or multi-tiered systems of support. Although these tools serve multiple purposes, they do not necessarily provide teachers with information needed to design, and even differentiate, instruction on a daily basis.
