Chapter Sixteen

There was no honeymoon period for Sawyer and Miranda. They moved into married student housing as soon as they returned from city hall with the marriage certificate. Her family was furious, and his mom wasn’t thrilled with him, either, but she gave grudging approval for him taking responsibility for this child he’d helped create.

They both planned to finish out the semester, and while Sawyer managed to get passing grades in everything, Miranda missed so many classes due to morning sickness, she finally quit. The feed company Sawyer worked for part-time agreed to take him on full-time, so they found a basement suite they could afford in Bozeman and settled into the rest of their lives.

Miranda’s pregnancy was difficult, and she did not recover easily from the birth. After hours of awful labor, in which she couldn’t get enough pain relief, she needed an emergency Caesarean section. The baby came out gray and limp. Sawyer’s anguish was so great, he wondered how people survived having children.

The days in the hospital were filled with one crisis after another, from feeding problems, jaundice, to Miranda healing poorly and too uncomfortable to try breastfeeding.

Coming home didn’t improve things. Miranda put on a good face. She told him she loved him all the time, called Piper their “precious angel,” and posted regularly to her various social media platforms about how blessed she was. Unfortunately, she spent so much time arranging Piper’s floss-like hair and secondhand clothing that by the time she had just the right image to share, she was too exhausted to actually do anything with the baby.

So, Sawyer took on more and more of the feeding, the diaper changes, the bathing, and the rocking. It seemed fair; he’d had all the fun and none of the pain, so the least he could do was ease Miranda’s burden now.

Though, as the days went on, he began to wonder just what burden she was carrying. Linda, Miranda’s mother, had come to stay with them to help for a couple of weeks, but she didn’t seem to have much interest in her new granddaughter. She had even less interest in the guy who’d knocked up her own precious angel. Linda’s “help” consisted of ordering takeout and wine and sitting in front of the television with Miranda, binge-watching crime dramas and situation comedies.

Sawyer felt like he was living in an endless episode of a comedy himself, only he was the butt of the joke, and nobody was laughing. He was glad when Linda went home. His own mother was sick and promised to come out when she could, but Sawyer wasn’t holding his breath. No, this was his life and he had to make it work.

The only thing good about his hamster-wheel of responsibility, the endless list of tasks to complete, was that he never had time to think about how miserable he was. He wasn’t sure how his life had gotten so badly off track, but somehow, in his determination not to let his love
