“It burns!” one hissed. “It burns!”

“Get back down there,” another said, whacking the first bat with his wing. “Or Queen Jarrah will show you what hurt is.” And that’s when Coorah sent her last pebble arcing through the air with her slingshot. She hit a wasp’s nest that was dangling in the highest reaches of a river tree. For a moment nothing happened . . . Then the air started writhing with angry wasps and shrieking bats. The white wisps sped away, with the vicious wasps trailing behind them, leaving the village in peace.

“Whew,” Gee said, rubbing his bruised elbow. “That was close.”

“I’m just glad they retreated.” Coorah hopped toward an injured platypus, taking a bandage from her pouch. “I’m all out of pepperbush goop.”

“It finally worked, though.”

“I think it scared them more than anything.”

“That’s okay, they scared me more than anything.”

“Yeah. And I don’t think that was even an entire legion of bats. We got lucky, this time.”

“What did you say to make them charge?” Arabanoo asked Gee, emerging from the river. “‘You’re not ghouls—you’re fools?’”

“No, I said—” Gee caught a glimpse of motion in the distance, and gasped. “Oh, no. That wasn’t an entire legion . . .”

Dozens of white wisps were flitting through the dark forest toward them. Twice as many as before. And Gee didn’t have any defenses ready: no frogs in the trees, no pepperbush goop.

“Run!” he shouted. “Back to the burrows, now!”
