Martha picked up the birthday party conversation again while Mr. Intihar got settled. She tapped her chin with her pen and said, “The owner of the roller skating rink is a good friend of mine, so I could probably get you a great deal. It used to be a lot of fun, and they have a game room where you can have your snacks and open presents and stuff.” She shrugged her shoulders and looked from Molly to Pen. “Just a suggestion.”

Molly’s eyes widened. “The roller rink is a great idea. What do you think, Pen?”

Pen chewed her lower lip and shrugged. She’d only ever seen roller rinks in movies. In movies, there were often a lot of spotlights and the music was really loud and they seemed crowded and chaotic. Exactly the sort of place where her Quirk could go crazy. She thought it sounded awful. “I don’t know. Roller skating?”

“Sounds fun,” Molly announced. “It’s decided then. Roller rink.”

“Maybe we should talk about it a little more?” Pen suggested, frowning. “In private?”

“It’s a great idea,” Molly blurted out. “We can’t talk about it forever, Pen.” She was tired of trying to negotiate with Penelope about their party. Every time a good suggestion came up, Penelope shot it down. And also, she had to admit that she was still irritated about their Star of the Week presentation. Seeing Mr. Intihar sitting across the table, Molly remembered how uncomfortable she’d been about what Pen had said that morning. She felt like Penelope had betrayed them all, somehow. She’d broken their trust by making fun of the Quirks around others, and Molly was annoyed. Molly added, “We have to pick a place today, or we’re not even going to get the invitations out before the party actually happens. It’s in three days!”

“Everyone we’re planning to invite already knows about the party,” Pen pointed out. They’d told all their friends at school that their party would be on Saturday afternoon, and they had promised to hand out invitations soon. But since they were still figuring out (fighting about) the details, they hadn’t gotten to them yet.

“The roller skating rink will be perfect,” Molly said. She’d begun to wonder if Penelope was dragging her feet on purpose, in the hopes that they wouldn’t have to have a party. That wasn’t okay at all. “Mom, what do you think?”

“It could be a good idea.” Bree gave Penelope a long look. “As long as you’re both happy about it. Pen seems to have some concerns.”

“We’re both fine with it,” Molly announced, before her sister had a chance to say anything more.

“What if we just did the party in our backyard?” Bree suggested. “We could hang decorations, and play some games. That would be the most affordable option.”

Molly grimaced. “What about Gran?” she whispered to her mom. “And, um, Niblet?” She looked over at Martha and Mr. Intihar, who were both within earshot.

“We can figure that out,” Bree said, seemingly unconcerned. “But I just don’t think you girls are ever going to agree on a place you’ll both be happy with.
