Chapter Twelve

Karissa followed me to my chambers. “Exactly what did you wish for?”

“To be unstoppable. Invincible. Invisible.”

Karissa narrowed her eyes. “You are already the best warrior we have, and you’re still in training. Why waste a wish?”

“You think that me wishing to be unstoppable was a waste?” Anger coated my voice. “I guess you wish I would have used it to free our people?”

“That’s what I would have done, so yes.”

At the resentment in her voice, I scoffed. “Unbelievable. I wished to be unstoppable because it’s not enough to remove a curse. I need to be able to protect everyone from future curses. With my one wish, I will never be defenseless again. Our people will never be defenseless again.”

Karissa stalked closer to me, but I didn’t back down from the commander. “The queen is marrying you off tonight to either Persil or Baylor. She just announced it.”

“Well, it’s a good thing that I’m in a fighting mood, isn’t it? I guess I’ll kill them all.”

“Then we will never figure out how to release our people.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “I’m not marrying either of them.”

Her violet eyes twinkled. “I didn’t think you would.” She handed me a folded-up piece of paper. “I’m sending you on an important errand. The queen’s life and reign has been threatened by someone… I’ll make up all the who’s and what’s later. Until then, get prepared like you would if you thought there wasn’t going to be an intervention.”

“If we spoil the wedding plans tonight, it just delays the inevitable, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah, until we figure out how to free Kian from the portal.”

Now was my chance to tell the commander that Kian was already out, but I couldn’t form the words.

“Do you really think that when he is free, he will come back to help me even after I betrayed him?”

Karissa nodded. “I’ve watched you both since you were little. He will forgive you.”

I stripped out of my wet robe and headed to the big steaming tub waiting for me thanks to Mariana. Gold flecks still clung to my skin. I picked up a soft sponge and started rubbing my skin fiercely. “And when he is free, why would I want him to come back here? They will kill him this time.”

“You underestimate Kian.”

Maybe. “Kian wouldn’t slay everyone here knowing that the Cursed would remain cursed forever. I don’t know all of Kian’s secrets, but I know that he almost wants the Cursed freed as badly as we do. Our hands are tied. No, it’s better that once he is free, he stays far away from this place.”

Karissa left me to my thoughts as I sunk into the warm bath. A few moments later, my door opened and footsteps that were too heavy to be a woman’s neared my bathing area. I leaned over the tub and grabbed a dagger from the stool. I released the blade the moment the intruder rounded the corner. My bath water swelled, almost drowning me. My throwing arm went awry causing the blade to venture from the target.
