Chapter 11

The strange power filled me with an incredible pleasure. I knew instinctively that this power was created for only one purpose: destruction. The universe had delivered it to me to give it new meaning. I would take this power and change the world. I breathed in, feeling truly awake for the first time in decades, centuries even. I had grown lazy, complacent in the fact that I had crushed everything in my path before, thus I could continue to do so. These last two years had reminded me that evil doesn’t die easily.

I grabbed my severed arm. The flames had burned it to the bone. As I held it, the limb crumbled to dust, armor and all. I dusted my hand off before holding my palm over the stump. Concentrating my mana, I quickly regrew the limb. The process was not pretty, but it worked. Once the skin had returned along with the feeling, I flexed my hand to test the muscles and nerves. If you weren’t careful, you could misalign the paths that the signals from the brain traveled on.

Looking around the cavern one last time, at this place of my rebirth, I spotted an arm sticking out of a pile of rocks. I knew instantly that it was Taris simply from the size. I flew over to offer my sympathies. He was under my sway, but he was a good leader. It would hurt to lose him.

I landed, and the hand sticking out moved. I brushed all the debris away to find the general missing a chunk of his waist and all of his legs. It looked like he’d done the same as I had and cut off his legs to save his life. The flames seemed to burn the very soul from a person, so while he still lived, he was weakened a great deal.

“Impressive as always, Taris. You always manage to survive.”

Taris’s eyes shifted before they opened. He coughed up a mouthful of blood before grinning. “That’s the trick. Always have a backup plan. Then again, if that thing had gone after me rather than Arthur first, I doubt I would have survived. Did you kill it?”

I shook my head. “No. It was pulled back to whatever plane of existence it came from.”

Taris pulled himself up. “I see. For Xenio to be able to create something like that, we underestimated him. Feel free to leave me here. It will take a few weeks for my legs to return.”

I looked at the wound. It was pretty rough even for a Celestial. With a sigh, I kneeled next to him and began to pour mana into the wound. I would be disgracing my name if I couldn’t heal a wound such as this. His legs slowly regrew from the stumps down. The bones grew first, then veins, along with muscle and flesh. Finally the skin covered it all.

“Thank you, Your Highness,” Taris said as he stood up.

“We still have more to do. Xenio is still loose, while Cassin is likely causing his own bit of trouble.
