I told her about Ben and the puffins and our great life on the island. “My home is here on Puffin Island with my funny painter friend and the puffins. I never want to leave,” I thought. But I did not tell Mother this.

Then, one day, a boatman came to Puffin Island. He had an important letter for me. It was from Mother. “Allen, you must come home. There is a war and you must go and fight,” she wrote.

CHAPTER SEVEN

The war

I could not stay. I had to leave the island and go to the war. I left that afternoon.

“Come back again! I’ll wait for you. The puffins will wait for you,” said Ben. He walked sadly to his lighthouse. His head was down and he did not look back.

Later, on the ship, I remembered my picture. It was on the island! “It’s OK,” I thought. “Wars are dangerous, and I won’t be safe. My picture is safe with Ben in the lighthouse. I am happy about that.”
