Indira’s elder son, Rajiv, was a pilot in Indian Airlines. After Sanjay’s death Indira asked him to join politics to help her. Though initially he was against this, and more so his wife Sonia, he felt he had to provide her support. He was gradually introduced to politics. In 1981, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Amethi. He was made the general secretary of the Congress in 1983. His cousin Arun Nehru and friend Arun Singh were asked to help him. Rajiv organized the Asian Games in 1982 in Delhi, and the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in 1983.
