Encourage decision-makers to invest more heavily in your professional success by proving that you are a credit to their mentoring abilities. Remember that your actions will impact your mentor, so strive to make them proud in all that you do. The better you make them look, the more they'll want to see you succeed.

Support their success

To effect change and exercise influence within an organization, players need many allies. Give decision-makers a reason to champion you and fight for your promotion by showing them that you are supportive of their vision and their advancement. This requires more than simply being a "yes man". Privately offer thoughtful feedback on their ideas and proposals. Publicly support their suggestions by speaking up in meetings and chiming in on group discussions. Talk them up to their supervisors and to others within the organization. Basically, do for them everything you would like them to do for you in your quest to get promoted.

Be strategic about who you choose to support and how strongly and visibly you choose to support them. As we mentioned earlier, office politics play a significant role in who gets promoted. The power structure within an organization can change rapidly when new leaders are appointed, mergers occur, or new lines of business are pursued. Don't align yourself too closely with just one decision-maker. Build relationships and support the success of several decision-makers across the organization. This will insulate you from the fall out that accompanies organizational change.
