CHAPTER FIFTEEN
A birthday soirée to be held in Mayfair, featuring the finest ales from a distinctive brewery, in honor of the birthday of a young woman who will undoubtedly be quite sought after when she makes her debut next spring, assuming she is not soon snatched off the marriage mart by a princely gesture.
It also has been said that a young man only recently come into the title of earl is eager to marry and settle his ancient seat with heirs so that he may quickly flutter back to the pretty bird with the warbling voice on the Strand.
Ladies, a half teaspoon of sugar added to a proper starch mixture will keep your petticoats stiffer for longer. This remedy has not yet been tested on husbands.

CAROLINE AND HOLLIS made Eliza review everything that happened between her and the prince twice through. Each time, they fell into cries of utter delight when Eliza recounted the kiss, still breathless with the excitement of it. Where did he put his hands, they asked. Did he apologize for taking such liberty? How was the kiss?
Eliza laughed along with them, but there were no words to describe what she’d experienced. They were teasing her, she knew, thinking it all a lark, but it was no lark for her. That kiss had awakened something in her, had aroused her to at least a healthy lust, if not something more.
She couldn’t stop thinking about it. She couldn’t stop wishing for more of it, for all of him. She couldn’t stop wanting all the things that had been denied her when she’d fallen in love with the reprobate Asher Daughton-Cress.
She was not without experience in these things and knew very well what she wanted. Asher had lured her into his bed between his whispered promises that an offer would be made forthwith, the bloody bounder. She should have known—his kisses had been too urgent, too demanding. In hindsight, it was quite clear that he’d been looking for a portal to slake his thirst. He’d used her and left her to bear the mark of a fool.
The kiss from the prince was more reverent than any of Asher’s ever had been. She sensed that his thirst was vastly different from Asher’s.
And so was hers.
She pondered this the next day as she wandered around the house, humming to herself, trying in vain to make some sense of this sudden new phenomenon in her life.
She had clumsily dropped some books she was carrying in the afternoon, and when Poppy dipped down to help her pick them up, she said, “All right, then, I can’t hold my tongue another moment. What has happened?”
“Happened?” Eliza asked, confused as they rose to their feet.
“Aye, happened! You’ve been wandering about in a fog all bloody day! Something has happened and I’ll know what it is. Is it the judge? Is he ill?”
“No.” Eliza laughed self-consciously. Poppy had been out last night. She had no idea that Sebastian had come again.
