Nestled in the woods, a modest tow-behind trailer sat in solitude amongst the canopy of green and forest. A padlock barred the doors. The boys stood and stared a moment as Riley walked around the trailer. He reached up under the body. Finding nothing, he continued along. Seeing what he was up to, the rest of the boys caught on and spread out looking for the same: a key. Everyone except Tanner. He spun the body of the lock away from the loop and was met with no resistance.

“They dummy locked them,” Tanner called to Riley.

When it became obvious the trailer had been opened by someone else, Riley didn’t break off his search right away. If he knew his stepdad like he thought he did, there might be other secret tools stashed away. Finding nothing, he walked into a conversation the other boys were having at the back door.

“Okay, so we opened it, now what?” Kim asked.

“Roy!” Donovan stuck his head in the back and yelled into the trailer. His voice echoed off the walls.

“They could still be out in the forest, setting obstacles,” Tanner offered.

“Seems pretty obvious to me they aren’t here,” Kim concluded.

“A few hours ago, we heard a rumble in the woods,” said Riley. “Nobody really knows what it was, but we all agree it wasn’t natural. We show up here and all three dads are nowhere to be found. My stepdad used to be a special effects guy in LA. He’s got some serious stuff in his arsenal that’s probably not legal.”

“Did anybody else know that?” Tanner asked.

“Come on, Tanner, do you think Dad had a big neon sign: ‘Hey, illegal fireworks here!’?”

“What about Harry?” Donovan asked and fixed his eyes on Kim. “If Harry owns the camp, then Harry must’ve known what they were planning.”

“Maybe they went to find you,” Kim responded, “without bringing modern technology. Gee, that was smart.”

“They had technology, remember?” Donovan gestured to the decrepit phone in his pocket.

“Riley, you must know your dad’s trailer. Do you think you’d be able to tell if anything is missing?” Tanner suggested.

“If it were packed, maybe. I’m sure his gear is strung out all over Acadia by now.”

As Tanner thought about the problem, Riley strode up the centre of the trailer. He didn’t bother to look too far. The walls were lined with shelving that was noticeably empty. The rest of the boys followed. Being unfamiliar with the gear didn’t prevent them from being curious about the trinkets and connectors and gack that still lingered.

Donovan and Kim were both looking high and low, occasionally losing themselves in the strange equipment. Tanner focused on the labels and descriptions. He muttered as he went, hoping perhaps a word might trigger a clue. Riley walked to the front. A small office greeted him.

Tanner shuffled along the aisle. He noticed some words written along the facing of the shelving. He read them loud enough for Riley to hear.

“Caps. Couplings. Connectors. Fire Bar. Propane Valves. Water Manifold.”

“Wait!” Riley called.

“What? What word?”

“Propane Valves.
