30. The Theft

He startled back from how quickly she had fallen asleep: touched her face; bent to check for signs. She remained unmoved, the rhythm of her breathing even. He adjusted the cushions: straightened her left arm.

He knelt beside her: reached out a hand, hesitant.

The signs of hunger had begun to show in her pulse. But he had established earlier that the house had, at present, nothing ready to eat. He must not disturb Sacha. And he’d been warned against prolonging her time without food.

Time stretched out...

Was she fading already?

He tried other pulses: yes, fading. But none gave him the information he needed.

“Why can I not just ask you what’s for the best? Why do the minds of Mortals buckle under the pressures of commerce until they cease to know what they need — what they want?”

He stroked her hair.

It gleamed in the low firelight.

“Folk devise artificial flavours to deceive a body — to lie. To make it so your own tastes can’t be trusted. Even yours, lass. You know — don’t you — that’s not a part of my Plan.”

He moved with care, so as to disturb her as little as possible.

He did the deed.

She remained motionless: appeared unchanged.

He lowered his gaze.

“Verity lass, I had to do this. When I tell you — when you are conscious again — what’s been done... because I can’t keep it from you, you must for—”

He winced.

He picked up the box of matches from next to the wood-burner and headed into the kitchen.
