CHAPTER 29

PUBLIC PLEA

Kyle sat in his recliner, watching his television. Rachel Franklin was on the screen in front of Kyle’s apartment building. The afternoon sun faded in the background. A few police cars were parked in the lot.

Rachel wore a pencil skirt and a solemn expression. Her dark lustrous hair touched her shoulders. “Early this morning, in this Woodbridge, Virginia, apartment building”—Rachel gestured to the building behind her—“twenty-eight-year-old Troy Ferguson and his six-year-old daughter, Sophie, were murdered in their home. Troy Ferguson was the neighbor and cameraman for Kyle Summers, otherwise known as The Predator Hunter, an online sensation who poses as children with the intention of meeting, confronting, and shaming child predators in person. According to the police, the prime suspect in the double homicide is a man who Kyle Summers and Troy Ferguson confronted behind a local strip mall. Unfortunately, the police have not been able to identify the suspect from the video footage. I’ll have more details as they are released from the Prince William County Police Department. Back to you, Stanley.”

The news program cut to a fortysomething male anchor with plastered-in-place hair. His face was just as solemn as the reporter’s. “Thank you, Rachel.”

Doug aka the Big Bad Wolf’s picture appeared next to the anchor. It was from Kyle’s video. Doug had his trucker hat pulled low over his eyes, his ratty blond hair spilling from the sides.

Kyle ground his teeth and had a death grip on the armrests of his recliner.

“This image is of the prime suspect,” the anchor said. “He’s known to frequent dating sites such as Grindr under the screen names, Big Bad Wolf or Man with a Plan. His first name may be Doug, or he may use that name as an alias. He’s estimated to be in his early forties. He’s a large man, approximately six-two and 220 pounds.” Doug’s image was shown in full screen, along with a phone number and a caption that read Prince William County Police Hotline. The news anchor spoke over the picture. “If you have any knowledge of this man’s identity or his whereabouts, please contact the Prince William County Police Hotline at 703-555-8621. And please, folks, under no circumstances should you approach this man. He is considered to be armed and highly dangerous.”

Kyle turned off the television, his heart pounding, his shoulders tense, and his jaw stiff from grinding his teeth.
