When people work together towards a common specific objective over a period of time, which is the case of projects, subcultures can be formed as well. In this way, projects are not just shaped by the organizational culture but can in turn influence that culture by adding to it through projects. Nevertheless, it is the alignment between these two – organizational culture and the project (management) culture – that will dictate the extent of success of the project. Projects that are seen as aligning with organizational culture are likely to have a less challenging implementation and higher success rates compared to projects that conflict with those cultural norms.

According to Suda (2007), projects have a higher probability of succeeding when they:

Understand organizations as living social systems, with core and subcultures

Assess, identify, work with and align with the organization's core culture

Are designed, in the front end, with a system focused perspective and are implemented as to that design

Tie directly to the organization's strategy

Align with culture and leadership initiatives

Understand that the project culture must function in service of the organization's core culture
