Meet Three Self-Healing Optimists
Curing the Incurable
Scott’s junior year in high school was the busiest year of his life. He was taking advanced classes, holding down a coaching job, playing sports, and participating in theater productions. He worried about not being able to afford to go to college and put a lot of pressure on himself to earn money. All of the stress and worry eventually took its toll.
One day Scott was doubled over by severe abdominal cramps. They were unrelenting, day after day. He started losing weight rapidly and missed a lot of school. His stomach cramps became unbearable.
Scott’s family doctor referred him to a gastroenterologist who diagnosed him with ulcerative colitis (UC), an autoimmune disease of the colon that causes severe abdominal pain, hard-to-control voiding, and bleeding. When diagnosed with UC, you supposedly have it for life, with only one inevitable treatment option: have your colon taken out.
Over the course of the next six months, Scott’s symptoms worsened. He did not respond well to the three or four traditional medicines he was on. He kept getting sicker, spending months at home, unable to eat solid food or attend school. He couldn’t go out very much because he was afraid to be away from the bathroom.
At this point, Scott had exhausted the traditional medicines, and the only ones that seemed to hold out hope were steroids. His doctor started Scott on a round of steroids to quell the symptoms, and it worked. The symptoms abated over the next several months. But Scott soon developed other problems: a weight gain of 20 pounds, and angry, out-of-control emotions. Both are common side effects of steroids. He was miserable and he was making everyone around him miserable. But his doctor kept insisting that this was the only way to treat him.
Scott’s life fell into a tiresome, depressing pattern, as he was never quite sick and never quite well. This is when he became completely fed up with his treatment. Nothing had really worked over a year’s time, or it had only made things worse, causing side effects that were actually worse than the disease.
No one really knows what causes ulcerative colitis, and his doctor delivered the assurance that nothing he had done had caused it, but over time, Scott found out otherwise. In deciding to get rid of this “menace” in his life, he discovered that the menace was him.
Scott intensely researched UC and discovered that his stress, poor diet, and negative attitude were blocking his road back to health—all issues he felt were under his control. “I had overextended myself,” he confessed, “creating more stress in my life than the body is meant to bear. That lifestyle lends itself to eating quick, unbalanced meals, which reflects within.”
To relieve his stress, Scott studied meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques, and energy healing. He changed his diet, made time to rest and relax, and created a more balanced schedule. He also emerged from the negativity that had been holding him back. During the course of
