Can You Be Your Own CEO?

In order to lead yourself, you must be your own CEO—Chief Executive Officer. Even if you are in a career and have no employees below you, you are still your own CEO.

What must a CEO do? A CEO must make decisions. He must constantly choose between alternative courses of action. Even if he takes advice, because he is on top of the hierarchy, the CEO must make decisions alone. He doesn’t have to do anything else; all other activities can theoretically be delegated to others. Tim Ferriss, author of The Four Hour-Workweek, is known for outsourcing everything he doesn’t have to do himself, reducing his working week to just four hours. He even outsourced his online dating. He hired a team of people to meet women online for him and set up twenty-minute dates, one after the other, in nearby cafes. He went on thirty dates, whittled the numbers down for second dates, and then chose one person to date exclusively.

If you can outsource dating, you can outsource anything! The decisions a CEO makes are critical to the identification, evaluation and implementation of opportunities. Everything else you can leave to others.

Is your ability to make decisions as good as it could be? You may be very skilled at making some kinds of decisions, because you have a lot of experience. For example, if you’re an expert tennis player, you’ll intuitively know where to run as soon as the other player hits the ball. That’s because intuitive decisions are made based on pattern recognition. But what if you aren’t familiar with the patterns and don’t know the rules of the game? If the data you are using for pattern recognition is inadequate because of lack of experience, or if you lack understanding of how to analyse the data, you will probably make bad decisions.

Should you give up on the idea of leadership because you lack the experience to make decisions? Of course not. If the patterns and rules aren’t familiar to you, you can use a process. A process should be based upon patterns and rules created by others, ideally Pareto Leaders, who have successfully taken the journey of opportunity before you. This sort of process will help you make decisions better and quicker and to execute better. It can also provide you with the understanding of the methodology of decision making. If you understandably feel uncertain about choosing opportunities, you can start by learning and using an opportunity process, like the one described in this book. As you practise the process, your fear will be gradually replaced with mastery and confidence. Your lack of clarity and confusion will be replaced with focus.
