This flowchart demonstrates a healthy way of dealing with worries. The truth is that everyone has worries in their lives but when those worries become intrusive and stop you from happily living your life, then it can be the right time to do something about it.
For example, if you worry that the earth may be destroyed by a passing asteroid, it is unlikely to be a realistic worry. While this could potentially happen at some point in the future and there have certainly been many movies with this premise, it is not realistic right now. Therefore, you can start to use healthy coping mechanisms (which will be discussed later in the next chapter) to soothe yourself.
However, if a worry is genuine, then you may be able to address it, so it is necessary to ask yourself the question: âCan I do something about this worry right now?â For example, if you have just opened a letter from a debt collector telling you that they need you to call them but it is currently 10 pm, you cannot do something about it right now because their offices will be closed so you cannot call them.
While it is a realistic and valid worry, continuing to worry about it until you can do something about it will only increase your anxiety and cause you to overthink and overanalyse the situation. Therefore, it is wise and helpful to engage in some of the healthy coping mechanisms that we will discuss next. However, when you can do something about the situation, it is essential not to fall into avoidance patterns at that point.
On the other hand, if you open that same letter at 10 am and the debt collectorâs office is open, it is essential not to fall into avoidance patterns as that will only lead to more worry. This is when it takes some inner strength to address the situation.
When trying to find that inner strength to ensure that the situation is addressed immediately, you can ask yourself some questions:
Will avoidance lessen my stress levels?
