Robyn’s experience at Trinity College, where she graduated in 1991, offers additional insight into the reasons why Black students at PWIs might find less support for transitioning to graduate study. Reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of her undergraduate experience at Trinity, she says:

[E]ven though it was a small institution, and we got a lot of interaction with our teachers, I don’t think at the time I went to school it was an environment that really encouraged you to do internships or to do research. Or, perhaps because I was a first-generation student I didn’t know to do those things. So, my focus was just to pass my classes and to graduate; but you know, [I] was sort of clueless as to what to do after that.
