Chapter 9¾

The Rage of Betrayal

‘That was pure genius! A master stroke! Getting that pompous Chief Inspector to listen up,’ Drunkula grudgingly congratulated Demona.

‘That was nothing, dahling! Just a bit of flattery to get things you want! Works all the time with the male population. Better than flinging around half a dozen spells and chants, such a waste of cosmic energy, I say,’ Demona shrugged, a trifle arrogantly. The Count looked at her with distaste and yet, suddenly he found himself viewing the plump, overbearing witch with newfound respect. After all, she was the Gothic Sorceress of the Undead; if anyone could possibly help find Sinistra, it could be her …

‘Where are you, liebchen?’ Drunkula silently cursed himself a million times for being such a pig-head. Sinistra had been so right; something had gotten into him, something that had nibbled and gnawed away at his reasoning, making him behave like an utter cad! Suddenly, all his fears rose to the surface, ‘What if she just doesn’t turn up … at all! Like Greta …’ His goblet slipped from his lifeless fingers, shattering into a million shards.

‘Maybe if you had been a little less forgetful, all this wouldn’t have happened?’ Demona couldn’t resist pointing out, as she helped herself to her favourite baked sheep eyeballs in slug sauce. ‘After all, you did forget your wedding anniversary!’ she reminded him.

At this callous remark, Drunkula just lost it! He angrily pushed away his half-eaten food on the plate, slammed his fist down on the table making the dinner jump out of their tureens with fright!

‘What is it with you women? Why does everything become an issue! I didn’t forget, it just slipped my mind … and I am truly sorry!’

Demona sat placidly, watching her dinner disappear down the drain. And just as violently as he had exploded, the Count crumpled and sank listlessly into his chair like a deflated doll. His face had turned pale; his eyes wore a haunted and hopeless look.

‘I just don’t know what’s gotten into me these days … I feel so hollow and empty and sluggish …’ the vile feeling of dread slowly crawled up his spine once again, refusing to go away. ‘I need to get her back, where is she?’ he whispered helplessly.

‘That, dear Count Drunkula Von D’eth, is a million-dollar question,’ Demona’s violet eyes glazed over, dark orbs dilated, and he found himself looking into a deep pool of intrigue.

‘The answer lies with finding out what’s really eating you up. After all, I believe zee Antidote is ready to deliver, isn’t it?’

‘No, not quite, actually,’ the Count tore himself away from those eyes.

‘What do you mean? You met Nostra last night, didn’t you? And I thought I heard you drop in zee werewolf last night?’

‘Well … yes, I met Nostra, but there’s still … a bit more work left,’ he murmured reluctantly. 3½ drops of the Potion, and it will all come together, Nostra’s words still rang in his ears; Drunkula silenced them hurriedly, hoping Demona hadn’t tuned in to his thoughts.
