son of a sea cook [soohn o'\on a sea cook] insigificant person; person of little worth or meriting little consideration
Ship's cooks were often recruited from the ranks of crippled and aging seamen; though tight galley spaces and hot stoves may have created certain physical challenges, the position required little exertion or agility. Important to the smooth operation of any vessel, the sea cook was nevertheless a marginal member of the crew — often isolated from his comrades, and contributing nothing to the handling of the vessel. One might refer to another as a “son of a sea cook,” therefore, for the same reasons one might call an opposing player a “bat boy” on the baseball diamond: The association with a subsidiary and servile function works to disparage.
“Do but give me the word, Your Honor, and I'll put another bullet through the son of a sea cook.” (John Malyoe's sailing master, The Book of Pirates “The Ghost of Captain Brand” 51)
