CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Ember was still standing outside the amphitheater when Xavier emerged. She was concerned about what her father might have said to him, but to her relief, Xavier smiled as he saw her waiting.

“Congratulations on your promotion, Commander.”

Ember frowned. She didn’t feel like being congratulated. When she spoke, she couldn’t hide the stress in her voice. “Please don’t call me that… I like Em.”

Xavier’s smile widened. “I do, too.”

Ember looked down, trying to hide the grin she was attempting to hold back. She quickly composed herself and changed the subject. “Why did Bastian want you to stay behind?” She asked the question quietly and casually, not wanting to sound too intrusive.

“Might you be asking as the commander, or as my friend?”

This time she let a slight smile show. “As a good friend.”

“Well, as a good friend, he told me information he is keeping confidential for now. But I promise I will tell you when the time is right.”

Ember had just seen Xavier keep a promise inside the amphitheater that no one else would have kept. Though her curiosity was overflowing, she decided she would try to be patient and trust him with this promise also.

“Honestly,” continued Xavier, “I think you have enough to worry about right now. We need to figure out a way to unify the militia.”

“I know one thing that will help,” Ember replied. “I have made my decision about the bonus kondri.” Then she clarified, “Actually, you made the decision for me.”

“I did?”

“Come on, you two,” Maleah interrupted from nearby. “The rest of the squad is at Manu’s to celebrate.”

Ember was surprised she didn’t hear her best friend approach, but she realized she had been distracted by many things, not the least of which was the fountain of giddy panic she felt in her chest when Xavier smiled at her. She spun toward Maleah and said, “Good, I need to talk to them before tomorrow anyway.”
