TO REMEDY THE INABILITY TO URINATE AND INFLAMMATION IN THE ROD* OF A MAN OR WOMAN

185. Take the brain of a hare and place in sour white wine. Give this to the patient to drink.

*Gwialen means rod or penis, and here must refer to the urinary passage.

FOR RINGWORM

186. Take some brimstone, and grind fine. Boil dock root and ox tallow together. When cold, add the powdered brimstone and mix as much with the tallow as will make a hard ointment. This will destroy ringworm.

FOR HEADACHE

187. Whoever is frequently afflicted with a headache let him make a lotion of vervain, betony, chamomile, and red fennel. Let him wash his head three times a week with this, and he will be cured.

FOR DEAFNESS

188. Take ram’s urine, the oil of eels, the house leek, the juice of traveller's joy*, and a boiled egg. Let him mix these, and drop the lotion into the ear little by little, and it will cure him.

AN OINTMENT FOR AN OLD SPRAIN

189. Take a handful of ivy leaves, and pound well with goat dung and fresh butter. Mix them together well. Apply as a plaster to the sprain, and it will be healed.

FOR HEADACHE

190. Take ground ivy, pound well with red wine, and apply as a plaster to the forehead of the patient.

He that does not take food when hungry, his stomach will be filled with wind and disease, which will produce headache. Taking dry bread with salt mutton as food will cure it.

FOR ALL KINDS OF PAIN

191. Take a quantity of broom flowers, water flower de lys, primrose, a handful of the roots of red nettle, water hemlock, the leaves of eryngo and the leaves of plantain when in seed. Add a quart of seeds.* Mix and pound well with unsalted butter, and boil briskly. Strain through linen, and keep in a covered box. This is a precious ointment for any kind of pain.

* Pughe notes here: Probably the four greater hot seeds - Anise, Carui, Cumin, and Fennel. Carum carui is caraway.

TO DESTROY WORMS IN A MAN'S STOMACH, WHEN NAUSEA IS PRODUCED

192. Take the herb called honeywort*. Pound it well with some white wine. Warm some of it and administer to the patient while fasting for three mornings, and it will cure him.

*Llysiau’r mêl, literally herbs of honey – Common Honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum, the Woodbine.

FOR PAIN IN THE BACK OR HIP

193. Take mouse-ear chickweed*, and pound well. Boil it with butter, and strain, then anoint the back with it before the fire, and the patient will get well.
