My PhD-receiving therapist was asking me about memories of my mom and I was saying the thing I remember most about her is being with her in the car. We drove places together. We drove to skating, we drove to ballet, we drove to school, we drove to skating competitions, we drove to Grandma’s, we drove and drove. I sat in the backseat and she sat in the front. We sat like this ostensibly because I needed more space—in the mornings when we drove it was 5:30 a.m. and I needed to lie down and rest; after school when we drove I needed to change from my school clothes into my skating clothes and so I had to crouch down in the back. My mother and I had our separate jobs in the car. We were not equals. We did not have conversations about whether hell existed or not. In fact, we did not speak that much. I don’t believe we even listened to music. If there was anything on it was the radio, but it was turned to the station that plays the bingy-bing sound and then says “Give us twenty minutes and we’ll give you the world.”
