Chapter Seventeen
Jace Orson didnât answer the door at his house when Chelsea and Travis dropped by. Travis had used Westâs resources to dig up a phone number for him, but Jace hadnât answered his call, either. That, and Ginaâs surety that Jace had been home the night of Lilyâs murder, was enough to make Chelsea want to track him down and force the truth out of him immediately.
But Travis pointed out that they had no power to force anything out of anyone. They werenât the police. And Jace not being at home didnât really mean anything anyway. Travis had confronted this kind of thing many times when heâd been on the police force: a witness or neighbor just hadnât wanted to get involved with a police investigation, so they claimed not to have been home or seen anything. It wasnât uncommon, unfortunately.
Travis left a message for Jace, asking him to call, and then suggested to Chelsea that their best course of action would be to give Jace a little time to get back to them. Keeping things cordial went a long way toward getting people to help when you were a private investigator, he explained.
He could tell Chelsea didnât like it, but there was nothing more they could do about Jace right then.
Hoping to get some good news, he suggested they stop by the police station and see if Owens had made any progress finding out who had vandalized Chelseaâs house. Travis didnât relish walking into the station, so he called Owens on his cell and arranged to meet the detective in a small park near the stationâs parking lot.
When they arrived, Travis parked in one of the visitor spaces. It had been almost four years since heâd left the force; been forced to leave, really, since he could no longer trust that his colleagues would have his back when bad stuff happened. Still, he felt a little tug in his chest looking up at the building that had been his professional home at one point.
They got out and made their way to the lone picnic table on the small patch of land next to the parking lot.
âWhere is he? I donât see him,â Chelsea said, shading her eyes from the glaring sun and scanning the short expanse between the station and where they stood.
Travis checked his phone to make sure he hadnât missed a message from Owens. He hadnât. âHe probably just got caught up in something. Heâll be here.â
âWell, well. I thought I smelled something foul.â
Travis stiffened, instantly on alert. He turned and found Detective Robert Ward. Ward had a wrapped sandwich in one hand and a to-go cup in the other. They were from the deli two blocks over that was a frequent cop stop for lunch. Travis missed their pastrami on rye, but he hadnât dared patronize the place since he had resigned from the force.
Ward swaggered toward them, a glower on his face. He cut a glance at Chelsea, dismissing her quickly, for which Travis gave small thanks.
