After our second romp in bed in less than twenty-four hours, we finally crawled out and took turns showering. Luckily, there was none of the awkwardness that was present the morning I did the walk of shame out of her apartment, after I woke up next to her in bed only to later find out we’d gotten married.

I wasn’t thinking about that today. Not the married part anyway.

Once we were both showered and had eaten breakfast, I said, “Rule number eleven—we can call a marriage time-out.”

She cocked her head slightly. “A marriage time-out?”

“Yup. We aren’t pausing our marriage because we can’t. Instead, we don’t talk about that aspect of our relationship during the time-out. We focus on other things. Maybe it’s to have fun or because one of us needs some space.”

Celia swallowed. Weariness hung heavy over her. “Are you asking for space?”

That nervous tone of hers had me standing from my chair and going to her side. I took her hand in mine and lifted her so I could wrap my arms around her back. I hated seeing her like this.

“No. I want to do something fun with you today. Something where we can forget about our marriage and just be us: Celia and Harley. Where we can enjoy our day off together.” Lifting my hand, I tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. “I enjoyed last night and this morning with you. I want to ride that high and keep it going all day. Let’s go out.”

I heard my words. They sounded very much like I was asking her on a date. I wouldn’t say that, though. A date made this more real. A date made us something. Not this ruse of a marriage. I was afraid if I said it was a date, things between us would get too serious, and I wanted to keep this moment light.

She peered up at me with her hazel eyes, which I didn’t notice until now had little flecks of brown in them. “Are you sure?”

I nodded. “Yes. Let’s get out of the apartment. Go to the beach. Relax. Soak in the sun and salty air.”

“Okay.” She licked her lips as her eyes dropped to my mouth.

I couldn’t resist and dipped my head to capture her lips. It was a sweet kiss. Not like the one that fueled our passionate night or this morning. My goal wasn’t to get her back into bed right now. It was like I’d said—to have fun.

Pulling back, I smiled. “Go get changed. I’ll meet you back out here in fifteen.”

With that, we each went to our bedrooms and gathered everything we needed for a day on the sand.

While I was slipping on a pair of board shorts, I couldn’t help but wonder if what we were doing was smart. We’d slept together twice. I’d kissed her sweetly in the kitchen.

I shook my head. This wasn’t real. We weren’t actually in a relationship. It was amazing how it felt like it, though. How a part of me wished it were real.
