Chapter 6

Not another word was said about the incident at school, not until my dad got home from work anyway. I was sitting on the sofa, the TV was on, but I was deep in thought about the ‘Pen’ and the recent drawings that had come to life. I was wondering where they had gone and how I was going to get rid of them? Was that even possible to track them down? I was so deep in thought, I didn’t even notice my dad come in and turn the TV over to the news channel.

“Dinner’s ready,” Mum said excitedly.

“Coming dear,” Dad called back.

A few seconds later my dad called out “Come on James! Dinner’s getting cold.”

It wasn’t until my dad called the third call, “NOW James!” That I snapped out of my daydream and replied sincerely,

“Sorry, coming Dad.” I quickly made my way to the dining room.

My mum had made my favourite food which was homemade spaghetti bolognaise with fresh basil. My mouth was watering, it smelt so good.

“Jackie, Where’s the parmesan cheese?” Dad inquired.

“All the shops have run out of cheese,” Mum replied.

“What do you mean run out of cheese? Just Parmesan?”

“No, all varieties of cheese, in all the shops in town,” Mum said disappointingly.

“Really, that’s strange!” Dad answered back.

I stayed quiet, with the question running through my mind; I wonder if it’s anything to do with that mouse? No can’t be, can it? I took another mouthful of Mum’s fabulous spaghetti. It wasn’t long before my plate was cleared.

“You were hungry James” Mum said, “There’s a lot left, another helping?”

“Yeah, that will be great, thanks Mum,” I didn’t realise how hungry I was.

“So Son, I heard there was an incident at school today?” my dad asked.

“Err, yes Dad,” I said not making eye contact with him.

“Yes, it was awful, I heard some of the other mothers say that there was a swarm of some kind of mosquito’s like insect, the rumour is that they don’t really know, but it’s got the doctors baffled,” Mum interrupted.

“A few of James’ school friends were bitten and taken to hospital,” my mum said facing my dad.

“Did you see it James?” Dad asked as he looked towards me.

“Not really Dad!” I felt bad not telling my dad the truth, but they would never understand, if they did they would only worry. It’s my problem not theirs. No one was seriously hurt anyway and most of them deserved it. I was trying to justify my actions and fighting with my conscience.

I quickly finished my second helping of dinner. “Thanks Mum, do you mind if I may leave the table. I’m really tired after all the commotion at school; I think I will have an early night.”

“Don’t you want any pudding? It’s your favourite, sticky toffee pudding with custard.” Mum said with a worried look on her face.

“Yeah, I’m fine thanks Mum, I am just really exhausted,” I said, yawning. I didn’t fancy discussing anymore about the mouse or the mosquito; also, I need to find out what else this ‘Pen’ can do.
