Shauca (Purification)

Unique to any bodybuilding/strength-training system, Iyer’s regime included Nauli and Uddiyana, which he considered to be internal purification practices, performed in conjunction with a water enema, that “stir up the ‘Lazy Colon’ to activity” by massaging the intestines, and thereby facilitating complete evacuation of the bowels.30Uddiyana is sharply drawing the diaphragm and abdominal muscles upward and backward. Nauli is jutting out the rectus abdominis in the center, where it can easily be rolled from side to side.

But each strengthening exercise in Iyer’s system could be considered as a purificatory technique applied to rid the mind of its psychomental muck. In order to be fully absorbed in an exercise, he counseled, one has to expel distractions: “Do not hurry through the exercises because of an urgent call of business or a visit to be paid. The hour of exercise must be kept free from [thoughts about] all other engagements.” One must also eliminate all wasteful thoughts of the ego, such as concern about attaining good looks or arrogance over superior bulk. “Beware of developing Narcissism,” Iyer bluntly warned his students.31
